Today we spent the day in Winnipeg. We slept in a bit and then went to breakfast at the hotel. We then walked a few blocks from the hotel over toward the Red River and the Human Rights Museum.

We walked past the museum to see the Esplanade Riel, a pedestrian bridge named in honor of Louis Riel. It spans the Red River connecting downtown Winnipeg and The Forks historic area with St. Boniface

We went to the Museum next and it was Sunday which is a free day. The museum had many exhibits across all countries, religions, and groups and covered most of recorded history. There were areas specific to the indigenous people of Canada but also many other historical sections. We were also able to view much of the city from inside of the museum at different viewing spots.

There were a lot of really areas to just sit in peaceful places. There were also a lot of really interesting architectural and geological elements to the museum. The garden of contemplation which was built from natural Basalt columns mixed with ponds and plants. We really liked that area.

The walls of much of the museum and a lot of downtown buildings was built of Tyndall Stone, a yellow limestone. You navigate the 8 floors of the museum by ascending ramps of Alabaster which you can see illuminated in the bacground of this picture. It was really beautiful.

The 4th floor of the museum had a new exhibit that had been touring the country but is now permanently installed at the Human rights Museum called the Witness Blanket. It is a really beautiful piece of art built from pieces of remnants of the residential schools where native children were sent in Canada after being removed from their families. It's very well done.

After the museum we headed over to The Forks market which is an open indoor market with many food stands and stores. We got some sandwiches and sat in the market dining area. We then walked around to see the stores. We headed back to the hotel and went to pick up our boots and parkas for Churchill where it will be much colder and windier. We also met our group leader Garrett. We took a short walk to a mall near the hotel for some provisions and then spent the afternoon watching the eagles game from the hotel. This evening we have a welcome reception for the group that we will be traveling with to Churchill. We have an early morning tomorrow on a charter plane to Churchill.
