Today we are on Puerto Jimenez Costa Rica. We anchored in the harbor and were tendered to shore in the life boats today. Puerto Jimenez is located on the Osa Peninsula on Costa Rica’s southern Pacific coast.
The town sits on the southeastern side of the peninsula, adjacent to a wide bay called the Golfo Dulce (Sweet Gulf). This bay is actually a tropical fjord, a deep ocean inlet that is rich in marine life. It’s one of the only tropical fjords in the world.
Aside from a few other small towns, the Osa Peninsula is literally covered with rainforest, much of which is protected as part of the famous Corcovado National Park.
Before our afternoon excursion were were able to visit the Marine Platform off the back of the ship and have a nice swim and sit on the inflatables in the sun for a bit. It was really nice.

We had some lunch and then headed off for our tour.
We boarded a bus at the port with a local guide who was very nice and very knowledgeable. As we drove through a number of tiny towns on our way to the Sloth Farm she talked about the agricultural history of the area. Many of the farms had been banana or pineapple farms, other crops, moving to livestock as government regulations changed, and then to farming African Palm Oil, then most recently to mixed crops and cattle as regulations and economic conditions changed again. Each tiny town that we passed through had very little in the way of infrastructure but they all had a soccer field, and a bar and a school.
We arrived at the Sloth farm and the patriarch of the family that owned it told us about the history of the farm and as they struggled to make a living in the different farming, his wife noticed that their farm had lots of sloth in the trees. She pushed them to transition to eco tourism and they've been doing well with that. We were assigned a guide, one of the grandchildren of the family, and he took us through the paths of the farm with a spotting scope, showing us where the sloth were in the trees and answering questions and helping people get pictures.

When we finished walking the paths at the farm we were treated to a fruit and empanada meal.

The whole excursion was very well done and we really enjoyed visiting the farm.
When we got back to the ship we rested and then went to our Valentine's Day dinner in the main dining room. They had Surf and Turf and it was very good. When we returned to the room, our room attendant Sunee had left us this valentine's day surprise.
