Today we pulled into Rhodes Greece just as the sun was coming up.

We had an early wake up to join an excursion to the ancient town of Lindos where there is a large site of ruins. They are on the top of a mountain so the views were spectacular.

When you arrive in Lindos you park at the edge of the main square and then you either need to climb the @200 steps to the top or take a donkey. We climbed but the Donkeys were cute.

We walked through some narrow streets of shops and restaurants to get the the area where you climb to the ruins, which were at one time a temple to Athena. One thing we noticed right away was a custom where they set pebbles into the sidewalks and roads to allow for some traction. Even shop floors used this, but they used different colored rocks as a decoration.

We climbed to the top and took lots of pictures of the ruins, and the Main Harbor of Lindos and St John’s Harbor.

After we left Lindos we headed back down towards the main harbor in Rhodes but we stopped to see a pottery demonstration along the way. All along the roads there were different colored goats grazing.

Back in Rhodes harbor we saw this huge Yacht called the Mayan Queen owned by a mexican mine owner. It was massive and there was a lot of action around it but we didn’t see it move. The owner’s net worth is almost 10 billion so this is probably one of many toys that he owns.

We walked over into the main town of Rhodes and had some lunch. All of the sidewalk cafe’s had these huge boot shaped glasses where they served beer or soda. We opted for the soda

We also had some delicious Gyros – here they do not serve them wrapped up as sandwiches but really as an open faced platter. They were excellent. The restaurants name was greek but the translation was old town fast ford. 🙂

We walked to the top of a hill to see a mosque and then a church. The streets here were also narrow and lined with shops and cafes. It’s a wonder that they can drive cars up and down these streets but they manage somehow.

The entire old town is surrounded by a wall that was the protection of they city in old times so when you wanted to get back to the harbor you had to go through an arch in the wall. Here’s the one that we passed through.

We headed back to the ship to have a quick nap and then off to dinner. We have a very full day tomorrow in Santorini where we will Kayak and Snorkel so we’re getting to be early tonight. More tomorrow.
